frequently asked questions

What is Christian Science?
Christian Science, discovered by Mary Baker Eddy, is a universal, practical system of spiritual, prayer-based Christian healing. It is fully explained in Eddy's primary text on spirituality and healing, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures. Christian Science has helped many people find emotional and physical healing, answers to life's deepests issues, and progress in their spiritual journeys. Christian Science is available and accessible to everyone; you don't have to be a church member to practice Christian Science.
Do Christian Scientists study the Bible?
Christian Scientists love the Bible. They study a weekly Bible Lesson to prepare for each Sunday church service. Readings from the King James Version of the Bible are an integral part of every church service.
What is the Christian Science textbook?
The complete explanation of Christian Science is contained in the book, Science and Health with Key to the Scriptures, by the discoverer and founder of Christian Science, Mary Baker Eddy. Science and Health is the Christian Science textbook, which explains the spiritual teachings of the Bible and reveals the divine Science that brings healing to all aspects of our lives. Since its publication in 1875, more than 10 million copies of Science and Health have been sold.
What are the basic ideas of Christian Science?
God is divine Love, our Father-Mother, supreme.
The true nature of each individual as a child of God is spiritual.
God's infinite goodness, realized in prayer, heals sin and sickness.
Do Christian Scientists go to doctors?
Since Mary Baker Eddy discovered the Science of Christian healing, six generations of Christian Scientists have relied radically on God for healing. We find the way Christ Jesus healed to be more complete and efficient than medicine. Anyone may call a Christian Science practitioner for help through prayer. (Practitioners are individuals in the full-time public practice of Christian healing.) Church members are free to seek medical help if they choose; they do not lose church membership or loving support from other members if they make that choice.
Who is your pastor?
The Bible and the Christian Science textbook are our only preachers. The Christian Science Bible Lesson, which consists of Bible verses and passages from Science and Health on a selected theme, is studied during the week and read by two readers at the Sunday service. Other pastoral services are provided by elected members and are defined by the Church Manual.
Is Christian Science the same as the Church of Scientology?
No. There is no connection.
Is Christian Science a cult?
No. Christian Science is a Protestent denomination of the Christian religion. Mary Baker Eddy is the dicoverer and founder of Christian Science, but she is not deified. She counseled her followers to "follow your Leader only so far as she follows Christ," (Message for 1901, page 34). There are no secret rituals. The Tenets of Christian Science, published in the Christian Science textbook, Science and Health, will be familiar to anyone with a basic knowledge of the Bible. (See Tenets below.)

the tenets of Christian Science*

  1. As adherents of Truth, we take the inspired Word of the Bible as our sufficient guide to eternal Life.
  2. We acknowledge and adore one supreme and infinite God. We acknowledge His Son, one Christ; the Holy Ghost or divine Comforter; and man in God's image and likeness.
  3. We acknowledge God's forgiveness of sin in the destruction of sin and the spiritual understanding that casts out evil as unreal. But the belief in sin is punished so long as the belief lasts.
  4. We acknowledge Jesus' atonement as the evidence of divine, efficacious Love, unfolding man's unity with God through Christ Jesus the Way-shower; and we acknowledge that man is saved through Christ, through Truth, Life, and Love as demonstrated by the Galilean Prophet in healing the sick and overcoming sin and death.
  5. We acknowledge that the crucifixion of Jesus and his resurrection served to uplift faith to understand eternal Life, even the allness of Soul, Spirit, and the nothingness of matter.
  6. And we solemnly promise to watch, and pray for that Mind to be in us which was also in Christ Jesus; to do unto others as we would have them do unto us; and to be merciful, just, and pure.
